Ninety Eight by Shannon Mayer

Thank you to the RomCon Contemporary blog for hosting me and Ninety Eight today. Ninety Eight is my second contemporary romance, and I took a real chance on this story knowing that it was not a ‘typical’ romance. I knew that in writing it, I was exploring a theme that was, at best, touchy and readers would either love it or hate it. Let me tell you, it was a nerve wracking thing to put the book out, to take that chance.
Bet you didn’t expect me to say that, did you? Here’s the thing, I’m not the kind of writer who’s going to tell you how great my book is and EVERYONE will love it. I know that isn’t the case, especially when the subject is more controversial than most.
So why would I write a book knowing all that? I think that readers are getting bored of the same old, same old (okay, at least I was getting bored of it) and I wanted to push the envelope, to see if I could break through that boredom for people. (As well as for myself). That is what I hope to do with all my books, to push the envelope and try and show a different side to love stories that maybe hasn’t been done before. (I think. LOL)

Because I don’t want to give away the twists (and there are a few of them!) Here are a few reader’s thoughts on Ninety Eight.

“What an emotional ride. Happiness, humor, heartbreak, mistrust, distrust. You laughed, you cried, and you even wanted to hit the bad guys and the idiots. It's a tale, about fighting for what you deserve and not settling for anything else. It's one of those books you can't put down and you root for the main character to get everything they deserve. Sometimes you just have to take a little advice and go on faith that everything will be alright. So, if you get a chance to check it out, do so. You definitely, won't be disappointed.”

“Wow. Just wow. This book was full of surprises. This is the story of Brielle and how she's been living her life following her nana's rules. The entire time I was reading I had a little hitch in my heart. I cried with Brielle when she cried and cried for her when she couldn't. When she was happy, I was happy. I honestly had no idea what direction the story was going to take. Every time I thought I knew, something would happen to surprise me. There were so many moments when I stopped breathing or threw my hand up to my mouth and was like, "noooo!" This was an amazing read.”

Numbers are everywhere--they play such a vital role in our everyday lives. But what would happen if we measured love with equations just as we do our morning cup of coffee? My nana had many recipes in her cupboards, but it was her calculations for love that she insisted I live my life by; and I've followed her rules all these years.

One Animal

One Moment

One Critical Impact

That's all it took for the numbers to start flying in a jumbled mess through my brain as I stared into the violet eyes that would forever make me question my choices. In a split second, the possibilities and reality of true love are revealed and I'm questioning all I've ever known.

A Tree

White Fences

Stolen Moments

I can't ignore the storm brewing around--and within--me. Everything I am is confronted by these new numbers, and all they represent. My past, present and future will all be determined by the gambles I make right here, right now. Again, it's all about the numbers.

And what I'm learning is, one plus one doesn't always equal two and sometimes three times isn't always the charm.
