A Fish out of Water or, Meet My Heroine
Laura Moore

Hi, Everyone!

I’m so happy to be here today at RomCon and talking to you about my new release, Once Tempted, a contemporary western set in California on a three thousand acre working guest ranch. There are sheep, cattle, and horses galore on Silver Creek Ranch. There’s even a tribe of goats. Among all these four-legged creatures, there’s one sole fish, one that’s most definitely out of water.

Which brings me to the title of my blog...catchy, isn’t it?

Generally, unless we’re talking about the movie Splash or Disney’s The Little Mermaid, the words ‘fish’ and ‘heroine’ don’t mix especially well. But the idea for my latest heroine, Tess Casari, came to me in a radiant flash one summer afternoon and I knew immediately that this savvy, smart urbanite would have to give up everything she’d loved and known in order to be the fish out of water in my story. We writers can be so cruel.

So let me tell you a little about Tess Casari. Born and raised in New York, she loves the city and its vibrancy and considers herself a true New Yorker. But after an ill-considered marriage that ends almost as soon as the wedding bands are exchanged, and then the unexpected death of her estranged husband, Tess decides that she must start anew and leave the city. It’s the only way to rid herself of the painful memories haunting her.

It’s a scary step to take, to say good-bye to the people she knows and loves and drive away from the only place that she’s called home. Her decision is made even scarier when she allows fate to dictate where she’ll go in California. So rather than winding up in a city like L.A. or San Francisco, or some other metropolis, she finds herself in quite a different California setting.

She ends up on a three thousand-acre ranch, miles from any big city. It’s a place where there are more trees, more sky, and more animals--horses, cattle, sheep, goats--than she’s ever seen before. And the animals are big, way bigger than the Chihuahuas and Boston terriers that strut their stuff down New York City’s streets. Tess is not a big fan of animals of any kind. Being surrounded by so many unnerves her.

Of course there’s one animal in particular on the Silver Creek Ranch that really worries her, but this one is of the two-legged variety. It’s a certain cowboy named Ward Knowles. Ward is tall, dark, and handsome, supremely self-confident, and infinitely irritating. But this cowboy might just be the man who can heal Tess’s heart and tempt her to love again...

So, have you ever been in a situation where you felt like a fish out of water?

To celebrate its release, I’m giving away 3 copies of Once Tempted to readers (from United States and Canada only, please) who leave comments. Your names will be picked at random and RomCon will announce the winners.

Good luck, and thanks for reading!
