What is Alicia’s Possession?

Alicia’s Possession is a mystery novel. It’s a psychological thriller. It’s an erotic romance.
I tell you this so that you don’t go into it expecting page after page of hot, steamy sex. Oh, it’s there all right, with bondage and Dominance and submission, but that is only part of the story.

Alicia has returned to her affluent lakeside home to recuperate from the horrific car crash that left her in a coma for two months, as well as come to terms with her husband’s infidelity and their impending divorce. All this has led to her depression to the point of agoraphobia, but she frequently hears the often violent arguments of her neighbors, Judith and Daniel. One night, the sound of gunshots jerks Alicia out of her sleep. When she looks across the lake, she is certain she sees someone stuffing a body into the trunk of a car before racing away from her neighbors' house.

Against the advice of her estranged husband, Alicia calls the police; but the detective assigned to investigate, Mason Crawley, agrees with Alicia's husband, that she imagined it—especially after he sees her washing down pain pills with gulps of wine. Mason’s suspicions become aroused, however, when he talks to Judith, who says her husband is away on business and can't be reached. Then he gets a mysterious call warning him to stop trying to find the missing neighbor.

As Mason continues his investigation, Alicia’s palpable sadness and vulnerability awaken his instinct to protect her and lead her into the light; but when her story begins to unravel, each new piece of information creates more questions than it answers. Then, as the relationship between Alicia and Mason grows, he makes his own discovery: The night of Alicia's near-fatal car accident, she was on her way back from confronting her husband's mistress, and no one has seen the woman since.

Is he falling in love with a woman who is a witness to a cleverly-concealed crime, dangerously delusional, or a murderer?

Excerpt From Alicia’s Possession

Mason lifted her hair from her shoulders and, first dunking the washcloth in the bubble bath, squeezed the water out over the back of her neck. He did that a few more times before setting the washcloth aside and massaging her neck and shoulders with such finesse she wanted to purr like a kitten.

“What was he doing here last night?” he asked.

“Your ex-husband.”

She turned her face up to him and narrowed her eyes. “What are you talking about? I haven’t seen him since Sunday night.”

He forced himself up and loomed over the bathtub so she had to crane her neck to see him. “I know that’s not true. I passed him on the street as I was leaving last night.”

“Well, he didn’t come here.”

“You have to trust me, Alicia. Tell me the truth.” His voice had picked up volume and bounced off the tile enclosure.

“I am telling you the truth. He wasn’t here. I do trust you.”

“Are you willing to prove it?”

She didn’t answer. Instead, she dropped her head to face forward, a dozen thoughts buzzing around in her mind.

Mason grabbed a fresh, oversized towel and held it up in front of him near the edge of the tub. “Stand up.”

“I can dry off myself.”

“Stand up.”

With a huff, she hoisted herself up at a twisted angle so she rose with her back to him.
He wrapped the towel around her then methodically patted it down to her feet then back up again before twisting it together under her arms. Then he turned her around, took her hand, and tugged her toward the bedroom.

“Come with me.”

Mason had her sit on the bed and told her not to move as he disappeared into the living room, leaving her alone with the impulse to get up and get dressed just to defy him, but she didn’t. He returned a few minutes later with a set of handcuffs hanging from his index finger. She stared at the steel rings and then up into his cold, unreadable eyes, and the blood rushed out of her face and tightened around her throat.

“Are you arresting me?”

A brief quiver at the corner of his mouth made her wonder if he were trying to suppress a smile. “No, my pet. You say you trust me. Do you trust me enough to let me put these on you? To leave yourself open and helpless to anything and everything I have planned for you?”

Her eyes widened and her mouth opened, but no words came out. She didn’t know what to say. A tiny voice in her head reminded her of everything she’d been taught to think about women being strong and independent. Everything she had believed about herself bristled at the idea of-of-of submitting to his will. She was a feminist, for God’s sake. But the words “leave yourself open and helpless to anything and everything I have planned for you” had reached between her legs as if he had actually touched her there. Her arousal shamed her, and the blood returned to bloom in her cheeks even as it rushed to her womb.

“Do you trust me to stop at any time—if you ever feel uncomfortable—when you say the word?” When she still said nothing, he added, “You remember the word?”

She nodded. Apple, she said to herself.

“What is your answer, Alicia?”

She glanced back at the cuffs then up into his eyes. What the hell was she doing?
