CAN’T STOP WRITING
Many years ago, longer than I am going to admit, I wrote my first “novel”. Seventeen pages on school-ruled paper and an obvious rip-off of the last Harlequin romance I’d read. About ten years ago, I began writing with the goal of publication. Between that time, and the moment I received my first contract offer in 2012, I had written eighteen completed manuscripts in very, very rough draft form. Since then, six of those titles have been published. There are still quite a few waiting on the hard drive of my computer, longing to be published. So you see, I could keep polishing manuscripts for a very long time and always have something ready to publish.
So what’s my problem? Well, polishing those old manuscripts and publishing them is a good thing, but I’m a writer. If I can’t write, I might as well not breathe, so even though I could work on the rest of those completed manuscripts for the rest of my life, my muse keeps urging me to write something fresh.
Awhile back I started a series on my blog titled Conversations With My Muse. I’m going to share with you one of those conversations that I haven’t published to Suspense, She Writes yet. It goes something like this:
MUSE: What are you doing, writer? Read More

CAN’T STOP WRITING
It has been eighty-three years since the walls between Earth and Infernus fell, and now our world stands upon the razor’s edge of extinction. Demon platoons are marching upon us. My home, one of humanity’s last bastions of existence, is under siege.
My name is Alana Devereaux. I am the resident demon detector of Cantati Forces and Platoon Commander. My job is to hunt down the vermin unleashed upon my world, and I love it. I live for the day I can kick every last demon’s ass out of this world. Except as enemy forces reign down terror upon us, the Densare Council sentences me to a fate worse than death.

Why Paranormal for Me
Thank you so much for inviting me to RomCon today. I thought it would be fun to tell you why I decided to write paranormal. I find that people in general are curious about writers. When I tell someone that I’m an author, the first question I normally get asked is “What do you write?” And when I tell them paranormal, the reactions vary drastically.
I get enthusiasm from the ones who read paranormal or watch paranormal shows or movies. Or I get two kinds of looks. The first one I call the “huh?” look. The one where their forehead wrinkles a bit as if they are processing the word. Most jump to the conclusion that I write about ghosts. The other I get is the “what!” look that says, I am not sure what to say about this. At all. Maybe I should change the subject and back away slowly. Okay… maybe I’m exaggerating a bit on this last reaction.
Honestly all the reactions I get are fine. I just spend a little more time explaining what I write to the huhs? and whats! My biggest challenge is getting someone who has never read paranormal to try it. Because they WILL like it if they give it a chance. Read More
Excerpt from A Pirate’s Revenge
Tonight was the full moon. Tonight he’d turn into a vampire. Tonight, for the first time, he’d be forced to suck human blood.
William O’Brien rested his head on his arm against the Green Parrot Inn’s window. It had been a month since he, his brother, and the Soaring Phoenix’s crew had battled the Fiery Damsel. Kane had granted the crew shore leave at Tortuga while repairs were made, the wounded healed, and supplies gathered.
The glowing sun sank lower and lower behind the mountains, changing white clouds to purple, yellow, and orange. Blue sky dimmed, turning to a light gray. He’d always loved watching sunsets, the clouds, the soft colors. Until now. His heart pounded hard, and with each thump, he knew he was alive, he knew he was human. But with each beat, he worried it would be his last. Thanks to the demon Zuto, he’d change into his worst nightmare.
The door opened, and William turned around. Doc strolled inside and closed the door behind him. He flashed one of his famous smiles, his white teeth highlighting his black skin. Despite his glowing red eyes, the man still remained jovial. William couldn’t help but smile back. Read More
Before reading an article about a woman who grew lavender to use in special dishes, I’d never considered the flower much. Oh, I knew lavender was supposed to soothe your nerves and help you sleep, and its purple blooms look very pretty swaying in the breeze. But then I began researching.
Surprisingly, lavender’s history stretches back to the Bible, and its mention in the Good Book led many to believe the flower acted as a safeguard against evil. A lavender cross over the door protected the home. In some countries, people believe fairies congregate around lavender, bringing healing and protection.
Lavender’s healing properties aren’t fantasy. Doctors used it as an antiseptic during World War I. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Read More

I wake to the smell of blood.
Metallic, like maybe copper or iron, mixed with something fleshy and raw.
It calls to me.
Pulls me in the way a thief is drawn to an open drawer of jewels. Certain as the sparkle on a diamond or the heady aroma of a priceless perfume.
I remain still, my eyes closed, just taking in the scent. Read More
If men were like ice cream, Riordan St. James would be rocky road.
Tilting her head, Natalie Meeks studied the new D.I.R.E. agent through the one-way glass. He was one major hottie and, like ice cream, the last thing she needed on her hips.
But, a girl could dream.
Golden, sun-streaked hair lay in sweat-soaked tufts against the wide horizon of his shoulders. His pale blue eyes were barricaded and hard, a narrow beard lining his tight jaw. Glistening, tanned skin, mapped with scars, covered a torso of concrete-like muscle, his back a crossroads of whip marks.
Hanging on a pull-up bar several yards from the other agents, Riordan appeared to be a loner, on the opposite side of a bridge from human contact and relationships. His perpetual scowl screamed back off, his tense shoulders poised for attack. All he needed was a do not enter sign stamped on his forehead to make it official.
It must be her lucky day. She had to figure out how to get past the human obstacle course and get inside. Read More
You know the old BAIT AND SWITCH gimmick? It’s when something is dangled in front of you that looks too good to be true so you snatch it up only to find out at the last possible moment that the bait has been switched to something far less desirable.
I thought about this in the pharmacy the other day (I’m a community pharmacist) – the companies that make Diabetic testing meters offer a **FREE** or **GREAT DEAL** on their meter and people buy it expecting all these great things – small blood samples! Painless! Convenience!
Then they realize they’ve been had. The meter may have been free, but companies don’t make money on the meters, it’s the TEST STRIPS. The poor person is now having to buy expensive test strips and lancets that only work with their **FREE** meter.
See? Bait and switch! No different than 2 FOR 1 Happy Hours where you end up staying waaaay past happy hour (who? Me? No, of course this hasn’t happened to me!) and then buy food and drinks which are now back to their regular price! Read More
