A Year Of Reinvention By Victoria Vane

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

While my writing career official launched in April of 2010 with my romantic historical fiction debut, THE HIGHEST STAKES (writing as Emery Lee), after experiencing several major career setbacks, I decided it was time to change gears. My first foray into the steamier side of historical romance occurred only a year ago with an erotic historical romance novella entitled A BREACH OF PROMISE , loosely inspired by a Georgian era play, The Belle's Stratagem. It has also recently been nominated for TRS's CAPA award.

Although I originally intended to keep my two writing personas completely separate, over time, Emery Lee and Victoria Vane have converged in that all of my newer work contains both a high degree of historical detail as well as a scorching romance. This equal passion for history and romance has become my author trademark.

With the success of my Victoria Vane debut, I was inspired to continue writing steamy romance and what followed has been an amazing journey with an ongoing series collectively titled, The Devil DeVere, after the rake of all rakes and series' namesake, Ludovic "The Devil" DeVere. This award-winning series is comprised of four novellas that each stand complete on their own yet connect to tell the continuing story of DeVere who links the six key characters.

In the first story, A Wild Night's Bride (inspired in part by the 2009 film The Hangover) we meet a struggling actress and a grieving widower and the machinating rakehell, DeVere, who brings this unlikely pair together. It is both a comedic and a passionate romp with Phoebe and Ned finding their happy ever after.

In The Virgin Huntress, Ned's daughter Vesta is furious that her father would go to London to arrange her come out and return with a bride of his own! When Vesta goes to London with her godmother, she is smitten by DeVere's younger brother, Captain Hewett DeVere. Hew, however, has eyes for another, which compels Vesta to take devilish measures to make him notice her. What follows is a hilariously romantic romp. Although Vesta is a spoiled brat, she is the perfect foil for the straight- laced war hero Captain

In The Devil You Know, we travel back in time to discover the reason DeVere spent four years abroad with no true explanation. This story is fraught with passion and emotion and also has a strong element of mystery and intrigue. In The Devil's Match, a continuation of DeVere and Diana's story, the erstwhile lovers are reluctantly reunited through the wedding of Vesta and Hew. Although the antagonism is palpable between them at every meeting, so is the unresolved sexual tension. But having been burned once, Diana is determined to bring DeVere to his knees. While The Devil's Match is by far the most erotic of these stories, it is also an emotionally intense and highly satisfying romance.

Although I had thought the series ended when I wrapped everything up with a neat bow, fans of the series have cried out for more. Thus, I am thrilled to announce the continuation of this series through a quartet of shorter vignettes that serve to provide added backstory as well as introducing new characters who will be re-appearing in future books.

The first of these shorter stories is Devil in the Making, a comedic romp which will soon be followed by The Trouble with Sin (Simon's story), A Devil's Touch ( an erotic romance vignette featuring Diana and DeVere), and finally Salime's long-awaited story, Jewel of the East, to be released spring of 2013. Two more titles, Devil by Another Name and Devil in Diamonds are planned for late 2013 or early 2014.

Lastly, and this is HUGE! I have commissioned an amazing artist to render gorgeously detailed illustrations and character portraits for my DeVere stories! In addition to launching a DeVere Fan Site , I have just published an illustrated version of Devil in the Making. This Illustrated Edition features gorgeous depictions of key scenes in every chapter. If this experiment is successful, I hope to re-release illustrated editions of the entire DeVere series. I hope you will check out this fan site with many book excerpt and special features. http://thedevildevere.com.

For a giveaway of either A BREACH OF PROMISE or A WILD NIGHT'S BRIDE, what most tempts you to try a new author? Is it s great review? A recommendation from a friend? A free book?

A lover of history and deeply romantic stories, Victoria combines these elements to craft romantic historical novels and novellas for a mature reading audience. Her writing influences are Georgette Heyer for fabulous witty dialogue and over the top characters, Robin Schone , Sylvia Day, and Charlotte Featherstone for beautifully crafted prose in stories with deep sensuality, and Lila DiPasqua for creative vision in melding history with eroticism.
