She let out a slow, nervous breath. “I thought I’d find you here.”
Startled, Cyprian jerked around. Moonlight silhouetted the lean lines of his body. “Then you’ve spoken with Pontius?”
“I sent him to look for you. He’s going to help you take our daughter far from this trouble.” His dull edged pain sliced through her.
“Maggie and I aren’t going anywhere until we talk.” This conversation would have been so much easier before her encounter with Felicissimus robbed her of the luxury of transparency. “You deserve to know everything.” She prayed her secret agreement with the slave trader hadn’t tainted her voice. “So which one is the Celt?”
Aurelia looked past the banister, biting her lower lip as she scanned the gladiators and recruits. At first, she thought he’d be with the gladiators, sparring, as his fight in the arena had shown his skills. But he wasn’t there. Her eyes turned to the newer men. The five of them bent, heaved a large wooden beam up to a shoulder and with a grunt, stood upright. The motion displayed the muscles in their thighs and calves. Their upper bodies, arms and chests were equally bulging; lines accentuated each tendon and muscle. Once straight up, the men promptly dropped the weight and repeated.
They glistened from sweat, beads of which rolled down their faces and dropped off their chins and jaws. Combined with the contours of their bodies, they resembled the gods of Olympus. A gorgeous sight, all the men were, as they worked on the training square.
Aurelia’s own excitement over the gladiators made her breathless until Iana laughed.
“Shall we get you a cloth?” she whispered to her. “The look on your face and the moan that escaped your lips, I’d wager you are moist between your thighs.”
Aurelia pursed her lips and tried to glare at her friend, but Iana’s giggles broke her angry look. She long suspected Iana had not contained her desires to feel a man there, yet she was startled at her friend’s suggestion. The Celt’s body had stirred a longing deep inside her. A fire burned slowly, coiling in her loins, making her uncomfortable both in her body and in her thoughts. Read More

Lady Elizabet Armstrong tugged the folds of her cowled hood closer to her face and sunk deeper into the thick, green shield of leaves. Mary, mother of God, of all people to rob, why did he have to be the new castellan?

The splashing, soft moos, and rustling of the cattle milling about below rose to Angelina’s ears.
Perhaps if she called out someone might hear her, although with the ruckus the animals were making, that was doubtful.
Still, she drew a deep breath and released a most unladylike shout. “Help. I’m stuck in a tree. Help, someone, please.”
“Are you in need of assistance?” A man’s voice, a deep baritone, floated up to her.
Angelina started and swung her head to gawk at the much too attractive gentleman squinting at her atop a light dun gelding. Why couldn’t a groom or a tenant have found her?
“I’d think that was obvious. That foul-tempered brute chased me up here.” She pointed to the bull, now affecting a completely docile demeanor as he rubbed his head against a contented cow.
The gentleman stared at her, an odd glint in his eye. His rugged good looks made Charles seem almost effeminate.
Heavens, where did that come from?
