Genre: Romantic Suspense

Bitter Legacy took a few chapters to get into the story. The initial opening chapter features Sharla-Jean returning to her hometown for her father's funeral, wearing a bright red dress. After being estranged with him for seventeen years, she returns to speak with his lawyer and discover what her father left for her. Big Jim's daughter isn't the only one tangled in the will that requires her and Josh, her father's close friend to work together to run her father's mill. At first glance, Sharla-Jean is a tough character but she's not incredibly likable. She's flaunting herself at the funeral, which doesn't help and the town hates her for leaving. Being thrown a new character and finding them unlikeable from the beginning makes it harder to engage with them and empathize their drama. The more that I read Bitter Legacy the more her character began to grow on me and soften, but my initial disconnect with the main character was difficult overall to get over. Josh is a ballsy character, that's pushy but not entirely unreasonable in suggesting a way around the arrangement required by Big Jim. The two of them bang heads or rather lips but there isn't an instant love even if there's an instant attraction, while they seem to hate each other. Working together, they have to discover and solve the mystery of who is trying to destroy the lumber mill and wants them dead.
