Villains and Characters We Love to Hate by Catherine Chant

Today I want to talk about villains in stories. Villains aren’t always evil people. In fact, sometimes, as in the case of my young adult time travel romance, WISHING YOU WERE HERE, they’re just opposing forces. Something that comes between the main character and what she wants or needs. They have their own goals, and most importantly a well-drawn villain (or in this case a villainess) has a perfectly good reason (in her mind at least) for doing what she’s doing, even if it’s causing trouble.

In WISHING YOU WERE HERE, Callie Reinard finds herself swept back to 1957 to save teen sensation Joey Tempo from a plane crash that takes his life at age 20.

Callie isn’t looking for romance at all, just trying to save a guy she feels died too young, but it’s hard not to start falling for the charming singer once she meets him. Great looks, amazing talent and just an overall nice guy. What’s not to love? Read More

What sets the romance genre apart? Why does writing it drive me into a passion and leave me exhausted? All genres can involve the excitement of anticipation, the desolation of betrayal, and you feel it as you write, but no other genre has the same intensity of effect on me.

In no other genre is it so critical that the reader gets into hearts of characters, goes through the heady moments, the hope and despair. This can only be achieved if the author writes with the same degree of emotional immersion as he or she hopes the reader will achieve.  Read More

Romantic advice to my 15-yr-old self

Dear 15-yr-old self,

Any day now, you will be handed your first romance novel, featuring that most dangerous and tantalizing of creatures – the alpha male. Whatever you do, DO NOT read it. That way lies madness and unrealistic expectations.

May I suggest some nice books about day trading? Which have not yet been written but keep an eye out for them because future you needs a retirement plan beyond depending on the kindness of strangers. Books about plumbing are also a good option for two reasons: 1) seeing everyone’s crap will give you a very realistic world view (especially regarding the opposite sex) and 2) see retirement plan above. Read More
